Los angeles lockdown may 157/31/2023 ![]() The only thing I can recall is when the premiere of “Avengers: Endgame” came out. Likewise, the Blue Angels were another big no-show. When NASA retired its space shuttle program, they promised a piggyback flyover the San Fernando Valley never witnessed. Re “ No Thunderbirds sighting in San Fernando Valley” (Letters, May 24): It is time to place a price on carbon, discourage its use and encourage new energy innovations by returning the fees to our economically strained and stretched households. Will it be too late for the climate, too? The consequences are more dire and permanent. The question is if we can continue our optimal existence if we do not spring into action in time to address these major threats. The collision of the pandemic and the severe menace of climate change further erodes our ability to recover from disasters of this magnitude. We need more articles on the impact of climate change. Re “Climate change collides with pandemic” (News, May 24): I hope King Newsom also knows that his budget next year will not have a lot of money due to reduced income and sales taxes for 2020 but I doubt it. That is laughable from a state that has basically told the federal government to go pound sand we will decide which federal laws to obey. Gavin Newsom says the federal government has a moral, ethical and economic obligation to help support the states. ![]() Re “Will Congress help California? Newsom’s budget banks on it” (News, May 16): We have shouldered the tax burden way too long while the rich got richer. Let the rich finally begin paying their fair share (they have stalled long enough), but leave the rest of us off the hook. If tax increases are meant for the uber wealthy, then OK. Tax hikes? Are you joking? With unemployment levels superceding those of the Great Depression, people now unable to make their rent or mortgage payments and miles-long lines of hungry families waiting for food handouts, just who is going to contribute to these proposed tax hikes? On a related note, how come every time I see a photo of King (err, Governor) Gavin Newsom, he’s not wearing a mask? How come he gets a pass? In hindsight we will learn that millions will suffer and die worldwide from starvation and loss of health care and other factors linked to the lockdown at a higher loss than from COVID-19. Life is to be lived and life does have risks. To quarantine and penalize healthy people who are practicing proper social distancing and hygiene and simply want to feed their families and not lose everything they have worked hard to build is immoral and unconstitutional. People who are at high risk can choose to stay home and continue to self-isolate and they should. It is the lockdown causing the financial meltdown and not the virus. The headline “Pandemic forces deep budget cuts” (May 15) and a similarly dire headline in a recent Los Angeles Times article regarding the pandemic likely to result in extreme poverty worldwide are both misleading.
